At the entrance of the Halikiopoulos lagoon is located one of the most famous sights of Corfu, but also of the whole of Europe, which is none other than the much photographed Pontikonisi – Mouse Island. Holy Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna

This picturesque church was built in the 17th century and around 1980 it was abandoned by the last monk who lived there. This is a very small religious church with a two-storey bell tower that “floats” on the footbridge. It is worth mentioning that Mouse Island was a source of inspiration for the German artist Becklin to paint “The Island of the Dead”.

The Monastery of Palaiokastritsa, one of the most well-known and famous places of Corfu, stands in Palaiokastritsa for many centuries. It dates back to the 13th century, when, according to tradition in the position that the monastery was built, the icon of Panagia (Virgin Mary) was founded. Today, proof of its age is the year 1228, which is engraved on the church gate, even though the rest of the edifices date back to the 18th century.

The church is of single aisled basilica rhythm with a wooden roof and it is considered a sample of the monastic architecture. A typical bell-tower of Ionian style is located in the courtyard. Priceless pictures of Byzantine and post-Byzantine period decorate the interior, while a sample of the wealth of the monastery one can also notice in the small museum that operates in its interior. In the museum of the Monastery of Palaiokastritsa you will also see a skeleton of a whale which is said to have killed a fisherman during the 19th century.

In the 19th century, during the British rule the monastery was used as a military hospital, while during the same period the road towards the Monastery of Palaiokastritsa was constructed.

The Monastery of Palaiokastritsa is situated at the top of the peninsula in Palaiokastritsa, in a position from where, the view towards the indented shores and Aggelokastro across is breathtaking. The road, until there, starts from the end of Palaiokastritsa beach and passes through the verdant nature of Corfu, with the tall cypress and olive trees.

The Old Russian cannon with the coat of arms of the Romanov, reminds people of the appearance of the Russians in the region, in 1799.

One of the most famous attractions in Corfu is the Paleokastritsa caves, each of them having a mystery around it. One of them has the name Nausika, the name of the daughter of the king of Corfu who saved Odysseus the king of Ithaca as Omiros and the Greek mythology describes. Homeland of “limoncello” is a part of southern Italy famous for its beauty, wildlife and luxury. This is the island where once dominated what we now call “dolce vita”, Capri, Italy. Its origins are said to have started around 1950 when a beautiful and fragrant garden in the center of the famous Capri was an inspiration for a housewife. The garden of the once house has been turned into one of the most popular restaurants on the island. One of Capri’s most regular guests was the Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis. He used to visit Corfu Island and the Amalfi Coast in the summers with his wife Jackie Kennedy. It is known that the Greek business tycoon used to possess the Greek tycoon. During his summer vacations, the island of Corfu was a necessary stop for him.

So, it is said that the locals were once told the experience of tasting limoncello. Being an island with such a strong Venetian aura, the people of Corfu did not hesitate to experiment with its production, which had a very successful development.
